MENINGITIS UPDATE – IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We are aware of concerns following recent reports of meningitis cases elsewhere in the UK. We would like to share the current guidance to help reassure our patients and clarify which vaccines are available.
There are currently no plans within the NHS to introduce a catch‑up programme for children born before September 2015 who did not receive the MenB vaccine as part of the routine childhood schedule.
On the NHS, the MenB vaccine is offered only to children under 2 years old.
Families who wish to vaccinate older children can access MenB privately if they choose.
The strain involved in the recent Kent cases has been confirmed as MenB, not MenACWY.
The MenACWY vaccine is routinely given in school at 13–14 years old.
Our practice can offer free NHS MenACWY vaccination to anyone under 25 who did not receive it in school.
If your child is under 2 years old and may be behind on their vaccinations, please contact the practice to book a catch‑up appointment.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update.
